An owl family will settle in INREAL nest box

2013-02-11
February 11, 2013, Kaunas. Organization “Mes Darom” (“Let’s do it, world” in Lithuania) initiated and placed three owl nesting boxes in Panemunės šilas (Panemunės pinewood). One of the nesting boxes has a logo of Inreal group on it. The nesting boxes are placed in accordance with recommendations of ornithologists since many hollowed trees of this pinewood were uprooted few years ago by a strong wind.

Nest boxes for owls are usually made from wood logs. How to make one? A tree is cut into 50 cm long pieces. The pieces are hollowed out so that the outside walls of the nest box would be 2 cm thick. The roof and the floor are made out of two few centimetres thick log slice. The diameter of the entrance hole of the nest box has to be 10-12 cm wide. This kind of the nest boxes has to be attached to the tree very firmly since otherwise the owls will not lay eggs there.

“Ornithologists have recommended to place the nest boxes in Panemunės šilas because many hollowed trees of this pinewood were uprooted by a strong wind few years ago”, – the head of “Mes Darom” Kaunas branch, Nemunas Tumavičius.

Firefighters have also participated in the event. They helped to attach the nest on the trees in 5 m height.
